This year Boone Hall is stepping it up a notch, and if you will pardon the pun, "that's no bull." Legendary Bluegrass icon Ralph Stanley & The Clinch Mountain Boys will be the headline performers at this year's annual Southern National BBQ Championship & Bluegrass Festival. Stanley brings with him a national reputation as one of the best banjo pickers and tenor singers in bluegrass music history. Dr. Ralph Stanley, as he is affectionately called, has performed on over 170 albums and CD's, has won countless awards, and is well known for his music that was a major part of the soundtrack for the hit movie, "O, Brother, Where Art Thou?" starring George Clooney. The 81 year-old's career covers over 60 years in the Bluegrass business earning him the title "King Of Mountain Soul." Rollingstone magazine hails Stanley as "one of the premier tenor voices and banjo pickers in Bluegrass music history, with no date of expiration."
Also appearing this year will be the Nashville Bluegrass Band, who carry a pretty lofty reputation of their own. With two Grammy awards, two Entertainer Of The Year honors from the International Bluegrass Music Association, and four wins as IBMA's Vocal Group Of The Year, Nashville Bluegrass Band is no stranger to acclaim from both critics and fans alike. The "O, Brother" soundtrack also features NBB members Pat Enright and Stuart Duncan on lead vocal and fiddle for the album's signature song,
"I Am A Man Of Constant Sorrow." NBB is often credited for setting the standard in Bluegrass harmony.
Local lowcountry favorite, Homeboy Reunion, will round out this year's bluegrass performers.
Oh yea, and there will be plenty of barbecue as well. Professional barbecue teams will travel to Boone Hall Plantation to compete in a cook-off sanctioned by the Kansas City Barbecue Society and the chance to win cash and prizes. Locals and amateurs are invited to show-off their talents in a barbecue cook-off, as well as a tailgating competition for the best sports team support. Free samples of the different types of barbecue cooked for the competition will be available in limited quantities. Full plates will be available for purchase by a variety of vendors. Beer will also be available for purchase as well.
This event will be an event for all ages. The highlights, of course, will be the nationally recognized bluegrass acts and the barbecue.
But you barbecue eating bluegrass loving cowboys & cowgirls will also have a chance to showoff your bullriding skills. WTAT FOX-24 will sponsor a mechanical bullriding contest with the winner taking home a large flat screen HDTV. A celebrity dunking booth will be featured as well with an opportunity to dunk local celebrities. A portion of the proceeds from these attractions will benefit The East Cooper Community Outreach organization that helps struggling families with a variety of services.
The kids will love the jump castles and a number of carnival type games. The event will conclude with a fireworks show, putting a cap on one of the BIGGEST FESTIVALS EVER showcased at Boone Hall Plantation.
